What Is Conversational Hypnosis

The term “hypnosis” is certainly not a word that we used in our daily conversation. Most people have some pre-conceptive ideas when the word “hypnosis” is mentioned. Most of the preconceptions revolve around the idea of an altered state of mind whereby a person is no longer in touch with reality and exist in a drowsy state called “trance”.

There is still no consensus on the exact definition of “hypnosis” so far, the idea of being in a “trance” state is therefore still a widely accepted definition.

Hypnosis in psychiatry however encompasses more than just inducing a person to be in a “trance” state.  Rather contrary to what is depicted by most Hollywood films, hypnosis involves a deep communication between the hypnotist and patient. The communication is rather complex process that exists beyond the conscious mind, by which a hypnotist is trying to shift the thinking of the subject towards a desired goal.

In short, hypnosis is an altered state of mind. When subjects are being hypnotized, they became more aware of their inner beings, unconscious thoughts and ideas, making those virtual entities became more real to them, and to the extent that it is made possible to be carried out. This state can be induced by the art of using suggestive words and ideas by the hypnotist.

Contrary to popular view, a hypnotized subject is more responsive compared to when in normal state. If you are to be a hypnotist, your suggestion of thoughts to a person is like clay, of which you can mold into your desired shape. Therefore, the responsibility of a hypnotist is great, because if the skill is sharp enough, a hypnotist can literally re-shape a subject’s inner being, hence putting hypnotic suggestions into actions.

But don’t ever suppose that hypnosis is not a common thing, or that it is something as magical as witchcraft. In fact a lot of people are going through hypnosis in their everyday lives, and if you observe close enough to notice thought suggestion inputs being given to people day in and day out, this fact will be apparent to you.

Let’s see an example how a person can enter into a “trance” state in everyday life. Have it ever occurred to you before?  When driven somewhere, and when you reached the desired destination you couldn’t recall details of your itinerary? Or you ask yourself “how on earth did I got here?”   Surprise! You were in a hypnotic “trance” state when you were driving along the way. The routine rhythmical pattern of what we do, in our example which is sitting on the comfort of the car seat, made our conscious mind relax up to a point that we automatically perform the task of driving without given much thought to it, a subconscious phenomena known as “zone out”. As strangely as it sounds, we are conditioned naturally to have the tendency to enter into “trance” states in our activities day in and day out.

Take another example, you are watching a movie in front of your 15 inch TV, later when the movie is over and you go ahead and do something else, but the thoughts that really stuck in your mind while you are doing other things thereafter are those sequence of pictures running on the screen. Obviously if a cat or anyone passed by the screen you would notice it, but the one thing that you focused on was the screen. To put this example into context of hypnosis, the movie made you concentrate solely on the screen, induces a “trance” state in you, and suggested to you that as if the only thing that exists in the room was that 15 inch screen.

Now let’s move on to yet another example in our daily lives, reading books. No matter what book it is, if it is interesting to us, our thoughts will be so captivated by the story that we become unaware of things going on around us. And as we read, our emotions are being influenced by the story line, we may feel happy, sad, scared, suspense and anguish, we may even express it more physically like shedding tears, laugh and etc.

This in a sense is an interaction between the information written down on a book and our inner being, which alters the state of our mind, this clearly is another demonstration of hypnosis. A book that you read may have a great impact on your life, not only that it affects your mood throughout the day, but can suggest you ideas that could ultimately change the way you live your life and look at things.

Our emotional response as the matter of fact, is an unconscious process, we don’t get to choose our emotional reaction towards things we encounter. This by the way, is the fundamental subject matter in hypnosis, suggestive ideas influence emotion, emotional alteration consequently influence life.

To put the idea of hypnosis practically for you, any repetitive task you enjoy doing is a way to hypnotize yourself. Jogging enthusiasts feel high when the running sent blood rushing through their body, giving them a healthy feeling, in other words, they enter into a “trance” state when they run.

In conclusion, entering into an altered state of mind is in itself a form of hypnotherapy, of which you may use on yourself, making it a valuable tool for you to strengthen your determination hence accomplish your ambitions.
